Matinee attendees of Broadway drama “Eclipsed,” about the survival of five women near the end of the second Liberian Civil War, were privy to a major surprise announcement at the John Golden Theater Sunday.

Joining the cast, including Oscar-winning star Lupita Nyong’o during the curtain call, playwright and “The Walking Dead” actress Danai Gurira and director Liesl Tommy told the audience they’re taking the Tony-nominated production to Curran Theatre in San Francisco for a limited run next spring, according to a press release. The announcement was also live-streamed on Facebook.

There are plans to continue dedicating performances to the 276 abducted Chibok schoolgirls of Northern Nigeria, who are still missing after more than two years. Curran Theatre will also carry on “Eclipsed”’s initiative to give free tickets to 10,000 underserved young women, who may not otherwise be able to experience a live play.

“It has been such a blessing to have this narrative told on Broadway and it truly thrills me that these voices will continue to be heard through this production,” Gurira says of the San Fran move. “I am excited to be a part of the re-opening of the iconic Curran and to share this story with Bay Area audiences next spring.”

Eclipsed is in good hands with its co-producer Carole Shorenstein Hays who has previously brought Broadway plays such as Fences, Doubt and Proof to Frisco.

More information is to come on casting and a ticket sale-date. For advance tix, hit up SFCurran.com.
